In my role as a high school computer science educator, I’ve discovered that learning never stops. One area that has particularly captured my interest is Cybersecurity. It’s not just about teaching students; it’s about continuously evolving alongside the technology landscape. My high school is offering a Cybersecurity course for the first time in the 2024-25 school year, so I’ll be involved in writing the curriculum over the summer.
I’ve realized that staying relevant in the tech world means constantly updating my skills. So, I’ve actively pursued learning opportunities, whether it’s attending workshops, earning certifications, or joining online communities like the Facebook HS Cybersecurity Teachers group. These experiences have been invaluable, helping me think about what tools and concepts should be incorporated into our cybersecurity curriculum. This summer I’ve signed up for a CyberSecurity convention (EdCon 2024) and I’m also excited that I was accepted into the GenCyber Summer Camp at Stevens.
What I admire about my fellow educators is their adaptability. We understand that technology evolves rapidly, and we must keep pace. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, we see it as a chance to grow. We explore new tools and techniques, ensuring our students are prepared for whatever challenges come their way. By leading by example, we instill in our students the importance of curiosity and resilience. We show them that learning is a journey, not a destination. This mindset fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, essential for navigating the digital world safely.
Teaching cybersecurity isn’t just about technical know-how; it’s about empowering students to think like hackers. We encourage them to anticipate vulnerabilities and devise robust defense strategies. By doing so, we’re nurturing the cybersecurity experts of tomorrow.
As I reflect on my role as a CS educator, I’m reminded of the impact we have on shaping the future. By equipping students with cybersecurity skills, we’re preparing them to be responsible digital citizens. It’s a rewarding journey, filled with challenges and triumphs, but one that ultimately leads to a brighter, more secure future for us all.
